Straight, No Chaser: An Evening of Thelonious Monk

All-star Twin Cities musicians Joey Van Phillips, Kavyesh Kaviraj, Chris Thomson, and Chris Bates team up to perform the music of jazz composer and pianist Thelonious Monk.

Born in 1917, Monk built his signature improvisatory style on playful rhythms and clashing chords. He performed with Sonny Rollins, Miles Davis, and John Coltrane and is a star of the American jazz canon.

Joey Van Phillips is a drummer, percussionist, father, husband, actuary, television enthusiast, little-league coach, and chicken wing expert. A third-generation drummer and versatile musician, Joey has written for, recorded with, and performed with Dessa, Aby Wolf, Jonatha Brooke, and the Grammy Award-winning Minnesota Orchestra. Kavyesh Kaviraj is a critically acclaimed composer, arranger, and pianist who has worked with several internationally renowned artists, including Wynton Marsalis, David Sanchez, and Justin Robinson. He began playing piano as a young child in Oman; in 2016, he moved to the United States to pursue a professional music education. Since then, he has earned degrees from Berklee College’s Global Jazz Institute and Columbia College Chicago. Despite being primarily a jazz pianist, Kavyesh has established himself in an assortment of music scenes, including hip-hop, gospel, R&B, and funk, wherein he has enjoyed working with Jamecia Bennett, The Steeles, I Self Devine, Lady Midnight, Desdamona, and Toki Wright.

Chris Thomson is a saxophonist, composer, and educator who incorporates electronic, classical, jazz, and other musical styles in his work as Cedar Thoms. He loves collaborating with other musicians and has worked with artists including Bon Iver, Father John Misty, Delfeayo Marsalis, Mason Jennings, Dylan Hicks and Small Screens, Anthony Cox, and Dosh.

Chris Bates is an accomplished bassist recognized for his remarkable contributions to the world of jazz. Bates is a key member of the Atlantis Quartet, where his dynamic and inventive bass lines contribute to the ensemble's distinctive sound. Over his decades-long career, he has become a sought-after collaborator, known for his deep understanding of the jazz idiom.
