Early Evening Jazz: Berhanu / Carpel / Ostrow

NO COVER 4:30pm Show

Pianist Ethan Ostrow, a recent transplant from NYC, presents two sets of timeless standards and exciting compositions in a trio show with drummer Abinnet Berhanu and bassist Dan Carpel.

Virginia transplant Abinnet Berhanu started his fascination with music on the trumpet but later fell in love with the sheer power of drums. A passionate, explosive drummer, Abinnet has had the opportunity to work with Steve Wilson, the Minnesota Orchestra, Bruce Harris, Russ Johnson, JD Allen, Allyn Johnson, John D’Earth, Justin Kauflin, Russell Wilson and Mike Hawkins. He has appeared at the Kennedy Center, the Library of Congress, the White House, Blues Alley, Bohemian Caverns, DC Jazz Festival, Twin Cities Jazz Festival, Embassy of Sweden, the Embassy of Gabon, and the Embassy of Australia.

Dan Carpel attended Berklee College of Music, where he was in the school’s Monterey Quartet. He was a member of Jason Palmer’s band throughout his time in town and was a mainstay in their residency at Wally’s Jazz Cafe. His time out east also notably included playing in groups led by Godwin Louis, Noah Preminger, and Melissa Aldana. Since relocating to the Twin Cities, Dan has regularly worked with Javi Santiago, Zacc Harris, and Omar Abdulkarim. He frequently performed with singer/guitarist Mary Cutrufello as well as Sonny Knight and the Lakers, and he recently became a part of Dylan Hicks’s Small Screens.

Ethan Ostrow is a Minneapolis-based pianist, composer, and singer with a background in jazz and improvised music. His music ranges from soaring melodies over head-banging grooves to powerful reflective ballads. Ethan's compositions are “dynamic, passionate, and gorgeous” (East Bay Express), incorporating rock, funk, and folk elements into a modern jazz aesthetic. Ethan has performed extensively across the United States and abroad in Havana and Tokyo. Having recently relocated to Minnesota from New York City, he frequently performed at venues such as Birdland, Dizzy’s Club, Chelsea Table & Stage, Nublu, and Rockwood Music Hall with musicians such as Dayna Stephens and Kellin Hanas. Ethan is a graduate of the Manhattan School of Music, having been mentored by Stefon Harris, Ingrid Jensen, Jaleel Shaw, and Phil Markowitz.
