Michael Cain Trio (with Barbara Cohen & Terrell X)

Pianist Michael Cain, bassist Ted Olsen, and drummer Adam Nussbaum will present two sets of jazz infused with R&B and contemporary influences. With special guests Barbara Cohen (vocals) and Terrell X (beatboxing, spoken word), expect an electrifying mix of jazz, soul, and improvisation that will keep you engaged all night long.

As a pianist and keyboardist, Michael Cain has had a prolific recording career, appearing on albums for labels such as Blue Note, Warner Brothers, Universal, and ECM, as well as his own releases. Cain has worked with some of the most significant names in jazz and contemporary music, including Jack DeJohnette, Ravi Coltrane, Terence Blanchard, Pat Metheny, Charles Neville, Bobby McFerrin, and Me’shell N’degeocello, for which he received two Grammy nominations as a pianist, keyboardist, and arranger. Michael’s latest release is entitled Hoo Doo.

As a composer, bassist Ted Olsen focuses on creating bright moments within the framework of spontaneous group interplay. As an instrumentalist, he plays with a bouncy rhythmic vitality and a fiery optimistic spirit. His groups have been featured at the Twin Cities Jazz Festival, the Artists Quarter, and Icehouse. In 2017 he released his debut record, Joyfire, on Shifting Paradigm records. In 2019, he was named an alternate to the International Society of Bassists' jazz competition. He has been a stalwart of the Twin Cities music scene for the past decade and is regularly enlisted by top jazz luminaries.

Drummer Adam Harder Nussbaum is an Indiana native now living in St. Paul. He is an active member of the Twin Cities music scene, frequently performing with the Jake Baldwin Quartet; Party Officials; and his own group, the Adam Harder Nussbaum Quintet. 

Barbara Cohen is an accomplished singer/songwriter, composer, multi-instrumentalist, and producer whose work embraces a variety of genres—from folk to trip-hop, electronica, world, and modern classical music. She cofounded the Virgin Records band Brother Sun, Sister Moon; collaborated with English rave luminaries Orbital; sang lead vocals for the French experimental duo Air; and released critically acclaimed albums, both as a soloist and with the bands Farm Accident and Little Lizard.

Terrell X’avion (aka Terrell X) is a fearless multi-dimensional artist who blends jazz improvisation with the rhythmic precision of hip-hop, beatboxing, and live looping. Known for his electrifying stage presence and deep musical storytelling, he brings an innovative approach to performance, drawing from a vast well of influences across genres.
