"Steve Kenny Quintet Coltrane Show” is a very high-energy and highly spiritual performance of some of the more powerful compositions by John Coltrane. It features Kevin Washington, a noted Coltrane scholar and one of the most famous Minnesota jazz musicians, on drums. Saxophonist Dave Brattain does an amazing job channeling the vibe and fireworks of the late great saxophone master. Kavyesh Kaviraj, who is emerging as the hands-down best jazz pianist in Minnesota, is gifted in his interpretation of this Coltrane material, which was sometimes as much about McCoy Tyner’s piano brilliance as it was about Coltrane’s. Berlin regular Dan Carpel holds down the low end on bass. This show has sold out its previous appearances at the Black Dog, KJ’s Hideaway, and the Crooners main room. This is a wonderful chance to hear this material played by these musicians to ring in the new year at the hottest new jazz club in town.

Steve Kenny is active in the Minnesota jazz community as a performer, composer, and curator. Steve is a founding member of the Illicit Sextet, Group 47, What Would Monk Do?, and his own quartets. Steve curated a weekly Saturday jazz series at KJ's Hideaway—and before that, the Black Dog Cafe—producing over 400 Saturday night jazz shows.  His latest recording, "Quartets," includes original compositions played by four separate ensembles of Twin Cities jazz musicians. In 2019, the national Jazz Journalists Association named Steve as a "Minnesota Jazz Hero" for his work in the jazz community and lifelong devotion to the idiom.
