Altruit will open the evening with a set of sound art and partially composed visual projections—improvisational synthesis and melody exploration—drone flute, etc. Then, Jump Loop (Bryan Murray on saxophone, Toivo Hannigan on guitar, and Cory Healey on drums) will perform originals and selections from the American songbook. Altruit will provide live visualizers during Jump Loop’s set from material provided by Bryan Murray.

Altruit (Karly Ohnstad and Steven Schmidt) is an audio/visual project out of southeast Minnesota. As projectionists and musicians, they have worked within the local music and arts community to curate and provide unique projections and sonic expression for concerts and events. Altruit interprets and augments moments through improvised musical experiences and hybrid visual synthesis. They are honored to find a voice and elevate experiences within the vibrant community of expanding creativity surrounding them.

After 20 years of living, studying, and performing in the NY music scene, Bryan Murray recently relocated to Apple Valley, MN, with his family. Driven by a strong urge to create and evolve, Bryan has continually embraced new and different mediums of expression. He has a background and education in jazz and has led an “avant country” band focusing on the songwriting of country music legend Merle Haggard. He has also been a regular sideman on other projects including Unspeakable Garbage and Jon Lundbom’s Big Five Chord, and he had the opportunity to join the “Love This Giant” tour with David Byrne and St. Vincent. His latest musical projects utilize a “modified saxophone” of his own creation and are recorded under the pseudonym “Balto Exclamationpoint.”

Toivo Hannigan is a guitarist, composer, producer, and software engineer based in Minneapolis. After graduating from Berklee in 2020, Toivo moved back to the Twin Cities, where he furthered his career as a freelance musician. Toivo regularly performs with acts including Jake Baldwin, JT Bates, Bryan and the Haggards, and Larry Wish.

Cory Healey’s unique drumming has led to collaborations with artists from many different genres. He has toured North America and Europe and has had the privilege of performing with Kenny Wheeler, Dr. Lonnie Smith, and John Abercrombie. While living in Chicago, he performed and recorded with Algernon, Fareed Haque’s Flat EarthEnsemble, and W.W. Lowman. In 2013, Healey moved to Minneapolis, where he’s worked with some of the Twin Cities’ most prominent artists, including Dead Man Winter, Dosh, Marijuana Deathsquads, and Anthony Cox. Healey leads The Beautiful Sunshine Band, which features Erik Fratzke, Noah Ophoven-Baldwin, Jake Baldwin, and Zacc Harris. The band’s music traverses bebop, free jazz, ambient, and doom metal.
