Mantis is the trio of Sean Carey on drums, Jeremy Boettcher on bass, and Scott Burton on guitar and compositions. They will play two sets of original ambient jazz music. Each of their performances is unique, blurring the lines among notes written or felt in the moment.
Mantis was formed shortly after Scott Burton moved to Eau Claire, WI, in late 2023. A restless creative spirit, Burton has always enjoyed channeling influences into new forms through improvisation and group interplay. This project draws on Burton’s love of melody and improvised soundscapes, creating a musical world through layering of sounds and deep listening. With simple melodies, Carey and Boettcher are free to interact inside the shared musical space in new and surprising ways.
Scott Burton has worked with everyone from saxophonist Matana Roberts to expat hip-hop producer Jneiro Jarel (aka JJ DOOM) to MacArthur Fellowship winner Ken Vandermark to Grammy winner Julien Baker. His music has been featured on NPR and BBC Radio.
Hailing from the vibrant Eau Claire, WI, music scene, Jeremy Boettcher is a bassist whose prowess resonates on both local and global stages. His journey has taken him to prestigious venues, including the esteemed Jazz at Lincoln Center Doha and Jazz at Lincoln Center Shanghai. Jeremy's musical endeavors have been as diverse as they are remarkable, spanning tours with artists as varied as S. Carey and Delfeayo Marsalis. His ability to seamlessly adapt to different musical landscapes underscores his versatility and musical acumen.
S. Carey is the moniker of Eau Claire, WI–based multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and producer Sean Carey, who is commonly recognized as the drummer, vocalist, and pianist in the indie folk band Bon Iver. Over the past decade, Carey has fostered his flourishing solo career via themes of nature and sustainability; songwriting built from jazz beginnings; and heartfelt, emotive lyricism. His latest and fourth album, Break Me Open, adds to a discography of three full-length releases, two EPs, and countless collaborations.
