Setting the stage, Nanny Neptune & Proper-T will deliver a poetry and piano performance that blends introspection with striking melodies, creating an atmosphere of intimate elegance.

Celebrate Black brilliance and artistry with us—a night where sound and story come alive in perfect harmony.

Earplugs are recommended for this show.

Joy Guidry is a bassoonist, improviser, performance artist, and composer of experimental, daring new works that embody a deep love of storytelling. Joy’s music channels their inner child in honor of their ancestors and predecessors. The San Diego Tribune has hailed their performances as “lyrical and haunting...hair-raising and unsettling.” Joy was born in Houston, TX, into a creative family that has shaped who she is today.

Joy holds a bachelor’s degree in bassoon performance from the Peabody Conservatory and a graduate performance diploma from the Mannes School of Music. She has presented her original work at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, The Kitchen, Redcat, and many other venues. Joy has been commissioned by the National Sawdust, the Long Beach Opera, JACK Quartet, Gaudeamus Festival, and the I&I Foundation. Joy has been featured in festivals, including the La Biennale di Venezia, A’Larme Festival, Cologne Jazz Week, Spoleto Festival USA, and the Big Ears Festival. In addition, Joy Guidry is the winner of the 2021 Berlin Prize for Young Artists. Joy is currently playing on a Heckel Bassoon number 6101.

Nanny Neptune (aka Junauda Petrus) is a runaway witch, cosmic bag lady, soul sweetener. The love child of Queen Mary of St. Croix and Black Neptune of Atlantis. This is her earthly debut.

Proper-T is a mystic, operating primarily in the medium of music. As a sonic artist, he writes what is heard and unheard. As a musical director, he has been charged with countless projects in the great creative hub of Minneapolis to reach the maximum musical potential. With multiple albums under his belt, he is now embarking on his eighth work in collaboration with producer Sehaj. This work is entitled “ICU”: a pleasurable mixture of synth and organic elements that surround writing that has been forged by the emotional pressure of the time since the pandemic and uprisings. Proper-T works to use his gift to discover unknown bridges that exist among humans who desire peace and healing in this world.
