Michael Gold Quartet

$15 at the door 7:30pm Show

Bassist Michael Gold, saxophonist Brad Holden, pianist Phil Aaron, and drummer Greg Schutte have developed a long-term, close friendship and deep musical affinity. Join them from 7:30 to 10 p.m. on February 15 for an inspiring evening of jazz.

Jazz bassist Michael Gold moved from New York to the Twin Cities in 1996. He has performed with such artists as Larry Coryell, Warne Marsh, Lee Konitz, Sheila Jordan, Tal Farlow, Michael Kanan, Art Baron, Bill McHenry, Steve Masakowski, Johnny Vidacovitch, Dave Karr, Catherine Russel, Dave Graf, and Patty Petersen. He holds a PhD in Jazz Performance from New York University and studied extensively with the pianist Sal Mosca.

Drummer Greg Schutte has recorded, performed, and toured nationally and internationally with many artists, including the Mickey Hart band, B.B. King, Ryan Bingham, and Chastity Brown. He owns, records at, and produces at the Bathtub Shrine Recording Studio in northeast Minneapolis.

Phil Aaron has been a mainstay in the Twin Cities jazz scene for over 30 years. Phil has recorded five CDs and has performed with many national and international musicians, including Lee Konitz, Eric Alexander, Delfeayo Marsalis, Jim Rotondi, Jim Snidero, Byron Stripling, Kendra Shank, Evan Christopher, John Fedchock, Jackie Allen, and Barbara Morrison. When he’s not leading the Phil Aaron Trio, he’s busy as an accompanist to many Twin Cities singers and a sideman in a number of jazz groups. Phil is also an Emmy-winning composer for film and television.

Brad Holden is a longtime Twin Cities saxophonist with a unique voice. Originally a student of Eddie Berger’s, Brad honed his style on the street in New Orleans for a stretch. He is deeply influenced by the improvisation of Lee Konitz and Warne Marsh. Brad is called when an authentic but original approach to improvisation is needed. He says, “I relish all of my playing experiences, particularly those with whom I’ve developed a long-term, close friendship and musical affinity.” This sentence sums up pretty succinctly what is happening in this trio.
