Society of Chemists

$15 at the door 7:30pm Show

Can chamber music and jazz fusion coexist in the same sonic landscape? Society of Chemists answers this with compositions that span the spectrum of art and pop.

Stephanie Wieseler - Tenor Sax, Flute, Synth
Jack Barrett - Piano, Electric Piano, Synth
Charlie Bruber - Bass
Ben Ehrlich - Drums

A wide variety of music—including classical, progressive rock, metal, and jazz—can be heard in Jack Barrett's compositions. Raised in the Twin Cities, Barrett studied in the northern wilderness of St. John's University, where he earned a degree in piano performance. There, he was drawn to the sounds of Chick Corea and Keith Jarrett as he delved further into the sound and practice of jazz. Since then, his path has brought him to the sounds of modern players like Brad Mehldau and Tigran Hamasyan. Intense rhythms, dynamic solos, and rich harmonies dominate Barrett's compositions.

Charlie Bruber (Society of Chemists, TABAH, Black Market Brass) started studying music using the Suzuki piano method but fell in love with electric bass as a 13-year-old after hearing Metallica bassist Cliff Burton's work on “(Anesthesia) — Pulling Teeth.” He released his first solo album, Finding the Muse, in 2023. He has also played on, engineered, and/or produced albums and songs by his friends PaviElle French, Kevin Gastonguay, Cole Pulice, Lynn Avery, Murphy Janssen, and Jack Barrett at his studio, 8vB.

Ben Ehrlich is a drummer, educator, and composer based in Minneapolis, MN. After studying with Ed Soph and graduating from the University of North Texas in 2018, Ben moved back to his home state and quickly became one of the top-call drummers in the Twin Cities jazz scene. Recognized for his versatility, Ben has had the pleasure of sharing the stage with Randy Brecker, Kurt Elling, Diane Schuur, Jens Lindemann, Davina and the Vagabonds, Javier Santiago, the JazzMN Orchestra, Leslie Vincent, and many others, including rock, blues and indie artists from around the country.

Stephanie Wieseler has performed as a saxophonist and multi-instrumentalist in a variety of musical styles and settings. She toured nationally and internationally as an ensemble member with Bon Iver for their third album, 22, A Million. Stephanie is an alumna of the Disneyland All-American College Band, where she performed with Arturo Sandoval and John Clayton, among other notable artists. She holds a Bachelor of Music from New England Conservatory, where she studied with Jerry Bergonzi and Hankus Netsky. She has performed at the North Sea Jazz Festival, Jazz à Vienne, and the Montreux Jazz Festival, among other notable venues and festivals.
