Early Evening Jazz: Michael Gold Trio

NO COVER 5:00pm Show

Michael Gold, Nathan Norman, and Brad Holden will play two sets of dinner jazz.

Jazz bassist Michael Gold moved from New York to the Twin Cities in 1996. He has performed with such artists as Larry Coryell, Warne Marsh, Lee Konitz, Sheila Jordan, Tal Farlow, Michael Kanan, Art Baron, Bill McHenry, Steve Masakowski, Johnny Vidacovitch, Dave Karr, Catherine Russel, Dave Graf, and Patty Petersen. He holds a PhD in Jazz Performance from New York University and studied extensively with the pianist Sal Mosca.

Nathan Norman is one of the Twin Cities’ best drummers. He’s frequently heard performing with local artists such as Connie Evingson, Joyce Lyons, Thomasina Petrus, Charmin Michelle, Dennis Spears and JoAnn Funk. He’s also played and recorded with the late, great vocalist Debbie Duncan; Illicit Sextet; Bill Banfield; Nancy Bierma; and Robert Huntley. Nathan holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the Eastman School of Music. He taught at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts in Washington, DC.

Brad Holden is a longtime Twin Cities saxophonist with a unique voice. Originally a student of Eddie Berger’s, Brad honed his style on the street in New Orleans for a stretch. He is deeply influenced by the improvisation of Lee Konitz and Warne Marsh. Brad is called when an authentic but original approach to improvisation is needed. He says, “I relish all of my playing experiences, particularly those with whom I’ve developed a long-term, close friendship and musical affinity.” This sentence sums up pretty succinctly what is happening in this trio.
